Parchment Craft is an ancient art which is enjoying a tremendous revival using modern materials and tools, it was probably used in the fifteenth century to decorate holy writings. Today designs are created by embossing and perforating artificial parchment to produce raised patterns and lace-like designs using a variety of special tools.
Basically an inexpensive hobby, very few tools are necessary for the beginner to produce beautiful designs. There are, however, an increasing number of accessories available for the more enthusiastic ‘parcher’.
Parchment craft is not limited to producing just beautiful greetings cards. Boxes, envelopes, Christmas decorations, flowers and bookmarks are but a few of the possible projects. Some examples of these have been displayed at the U3A monthly meetings.
Every three months we undertake a new project pack, always with several options – from simple to more complex – in colour or ‘whitework’. Materials are provided, but after the first few sessions participants will need to purchase a few simple tools.
